From 4750 to 6500: Everest’s New Covered Hoppers Revolutionize Grain Shipping

By February 12, 2025No Comments

Historically Railcar designs do not change that much.  4750 Cu Ft covered hoppers have been the work horse of the rail industry from the early 1970’s through the mid 1990’s until a new generation of 5100 Cu Ft-286 gross rail load covered hoppers were introduced.  Since the mid 1990’s covered hoppers have been progressively increasing in size due to ever lighter car designs. One could now argue that 5400 Cu Ft cars are the latest and greatest unless you’re the BNSF railroad who prefers a 5200 Cu Ft covered hopper.  Previously shippers had one or two Cubic Foot Car designs to choose from. Fast forward to 2025 and a grain shipper for example can choose from cars ranging in size from 4750 Cu Ft to 6500 Cu Ft. To continue to meet our customers’ expectations, Everest Railcar added 6300-6500 Cu Ft covered hoppers to our fleet.
